An SPIE representative will be allowed to take a seat on the Board of Directors at the body's spring meeting later this month. A press release at http://www.abet.org/latest.shtml provides more information about SPIE, and you can check out the society's website at www.spie.org.

CHRONICLE NOTES ABET ACCREDITATION’S ROLE IN IMPROVED
TEACHING WITHIN ENGINEERING COLLEGES
In “The Tough Road to Better Science Teaching,” an article from this
week’s Chronicle of Higher Education, Jeffrey Brainard
reports on the challenges faced by those seeking to improve teaching
methods in undergraduate science. Engineering colleges, Brainard
notes, “appear to be further along” in these efforts, in part
because of ABET’s shift to outcomes-based assessment in the 1990s.
Brainard references the results of Penn State’s Engineering
Change study (http://www.abet.org/papers.shtml)
as evidence of improved learning outcomes among engineering students
educated after the shift. The article can be accessed through the
Chronicle’s website at
http://chronicle.com/weekly/v53/i48/48a01601.htm.
